Rhinitis of Pregnancy: Common Myths

Rhinitis of Pregnancy Nasal Congestion

Nasal Congestion (stuffy nose) During Pregnancy

“I never had allergies before; I only get allergies when I’m pregnant.”

If you did not have allergies BEFORE you became pregnant, it would be unusual for you to develop allergies because you became pregnant.

It is much more likely that your stuffy nose is the result of Rhinitis of Pregnancy.

“Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are completely safe during pregnancy.”

There are many over-the-counter medications that can be harmful to your developing baby. Even if you are not pregnant, some OTC medications can interact with prescription drugs, with other OTC drugs, and can be harmful even when taken according to directions.

If you are pregnant, and you are considering taking over-the-counter drugs, you must consult your obstetrician!

“Natural remedies and treatments are safe during pregnancy.”

The use of herbal remedies and supplements during pregnancy should be approached with the same caution that you would use for pharmaceuticals – both over-the-counter and prescription!

Some herbal remedies cause thinning of the blood and can increase your risk of bleeding; some have even been linked to miscarriage!

The best online source that I have found for the use of herbal remedies during pregnancy is by the “babycentre”, in the UK:

Use great caution with any supplement or herbal remedy during pregnancy, and only with the guidance of a trusted expert!

“Anything my doctor prescribes during pregnancy is safe – after all, it’s from my doctor.”

I don’t want to malign doctors (I am one, after all), but we ARE human; we are fallible. If you are pregnant, and a physician prescribes medications for you, you owe it to yourself to double- and triple-check that it is safe for you to take during your pregnancy.

Of course, if you have a serious medical condition, you may not have a choice, and understanding that risk/benefit balance will help you and your physician to make the right decision.

If you are pregnant, and you are considering taking ANY over-the-counter drug, any prescription medication, or any herbal supplements, you must consult your obstetrician. You owe it to that growing pumpkin inside you :))
