13 Startling Facts About Asthma

Asthma is a big deal.  In fact, it is a huge deal, and is growing.  It can be debilitating.  It can be fatal.  It IS expensive.  In dollars.  In lost time.  In lost activity.  Here are some facts.  Because asthma is often linked with other respiratory or aero-digestive disorders, consider whether you or your child have these other CAID disorders also.  Treating those can often reduce or cure the asthma.

  1. 34 Million diagnosed with asthma in USA during their lifetimes
  2. This Number is Growing!!  Predicted to be 100 Million by year 2025!
  3. 20 million Americans diagnosed with asthma Right Now
  4. 9 Million children less than 18 years diagnosed with asthma
  5. Asthma responsible for 500,000 hospitalizations per year in US
  6. Children aged 5-17 years miss more than 12 Million days of school per year
  7. Adults miss more than 10 Million days of work per year due to asthma
  8. Cost of asthma nearly $20 Billion per year!

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, EVERY DAY:

  1. 40,000 people miss school or work due to asthma
  2. 30,000 people have a severe asthma exacerbation
  3. 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma
  4. 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma
  5. 11 people die from asthma every day in the U.S.

Here is a ranking of cities in the United States for those with asthma.

Asthma is one of the Chronic Aero-digestive Inflammatory Disorders, or CAID.  These disorders are often found together – they are “co-morbidities,” meaning that they are linked, according to the “Unified Airway Model“.  For example, more than half of those with sinusitis have a history of allergic rhinitis.  According to some experts, nearly 80%, or even more, of children with asthma also have allergies.

So what?

Well, if you have a child with severe asthma, and they also have allergies or sinusitis, getting those other problems treated can make a huge improvement in their asthma.  I recently reviewed how to use the Unified Airway Model to improve your child’s health.  In addition, there are some great tips in the post, “Stop Breathing: Your Air is Killing You (and what to do about it)” and “How to Use Plants to Detoxify Your Air“.
